Sounds like you have either a port conflict or an IRQ conflict. Some other device is using one or both of those that your scanner needs with the scanner's driver software default settings. You need to find out what the scanner default settings are, then find out what settings everything else on your computer are using. The whole process of adjusting multiple devices to "plug and play" can be a pain in the butt the first time you have to do it. ...they should call it "plug and pray"!
