I used the early Dershowitz materials in the 60's when I took Crim. Law at Michigan; they were marvelous. I have a friend and colleague on my faculty who was co-author with him on those materials and through him and others and through his writings, I have come to respect Dershowitz as one of the better academic minds in our profession today. It is not useful to use a student's stupid statement to attack either the institution she attended or the professor from whom she got her ideas. They are hers alone. But having said that, I have been very disappointed in Prof. Dershowitz's second career. He is a strong appellate attorney both in research and brief writing and in oral argument. Here, however, it sounds like the trial lawyer is bringing him in mostly for his name and that would be a big mistake since I agree witht he others that since the Tyson rape appeal and statements he has made publically, his stature has been damaged in the halls of justice--both with judges and lawyers.
