Diamond Jim's Nevada Club question

Has anyone tried to figure out the numbering system on the Diamond Jim serially numbered chips? Always a letter, followed by a 3-digit number, so there's potentially 999 chips for each letter used, assuming all numbers used. How many letters are known, and do they have any significance, or just A-B-C-D, etc. Same or different pattern for the $1's vs. the $5's and above.

I only have a couple of these, but I bet if we had enough samples, we could draw some pretty good conclusions, like solving a jigsaw puzzle.

So, has anyone already tried to solve the puzzle?
