Good advice from Dick! A couple more suggestions about what to look for in a camera that will suit your needs. As Dick said, commonly available batteries are a plus, but only if you aren't going to use the unit a lot in one session. The Li/Ion batteries in my Mavica are extented use, and you can, as I have, buy an extra with a charger, so you'll have a spare battery that is smaller than a pack of smokes. The advantage of floppy disks in the Mavica not mentioned yet is, if you are remote (not close to a computer) and someone would like a copy of a photo you just took, the memory in the Mavica will allow you to store and copy the contents of an entire floppy onto another floppy, and just hand that disk to them.
The pros that I work with at the races use the higher density disk driven cameras, but they have to. The news services require very high resolution digital photo images.
Lastly, when you figure out which camera you might want, shop your local stores, them shop the web. You might be able to save more than a few bucks from either source.
