I'll stand shoulder to shoulder with JIMBO on this issue. Folks, it "ain't" up to the club officers to change the name of CCGTCC. Nor will a straw poll on this bulletin board accomplish what some otherwise well-meaning folks are suggesting. It takes a change in the club's current Constitution and ByLaws to do what some of you are clamoring for. I would respectfully suggest that those who are seriously interested in effecting such a name change.... to go to the top of the club's website home page and click on "Constitution and Bylaws" to see what it says with respect to changing them. If still so inclined, then ANYONE can make an official proposal to change the C&BL.... in a formal manner. Even if such a request were formally made, it would be too late to consider at this year's convention under the present C&BL. Please allow me to simply say (as an "old-timer) that much thought went into the name this group selected back in 1988 by many club members back then such as yourselves are today.
The addition of spin-off collectibles within our group is nothing new.... as some of the newcomers seem to think. There were many collectors ten years ago who collected matchbooks, postcards, dice, swizzle sticks, menus, dinnerware, slot cups, belly glass, pins, etc.... However, the main focus of the club was always to be intended for collectors of casino chips and gaming tokens. There is plenty of room in this organziation for splinter groups... or spin-off hobbiests. Why destroy our tie-in with numismatics by cheapening our hard-fought gains? It took a long time to legitimize casino chips and gaming tokens to be taken seriously by our coin collecting cousins. Do some of you really think that our legitimacy would remain intact when we become known as the napkin collectors? How about well respected magazines, such as Casino Player, Casino Journal, Poker Digest, Card Player? Do you think that club's current standing (status) will remain high in their view by changing our name to Casino Collectibles? I think not. I recall successfully petitioning Numismatic News for our own separate classification in the classified section of this well respected weekly publication because of our close tie in with money. (chips and tokens are money, folks ..... ashtrays, matchbooks, dice, swizzle sticks are not!)
So in short; put forth your official formal proposal to change the C&BL's, as you are entitled to do so under the rules. But don't expect it to be a cake-walk to see the club name changed in the near future. Just MY opinion that was solicited. I've simply taken advantage of the invitation that was extended to express it, ... for which I cordially thank you all. Sorry for the long post.
