Good story on the two chips in the scan.
I was interviewing an old timer for a story in Gaming Times. When I was leaving, he gave me a slot cup FULL of chips. He was glad to find someone that would appreciate them. The Sands chip was right on top. I almost choked. I told him, maybe it would be a good idea to get an appraisal on them before he gave them away. His answer was " None needed, give them a good home".
There was 2 each of the scanned chips in the slot cup. No one had ever seen the Flamingo chip before. I traded 1, for what I suspect was the largest ever trade value for 1 chip. No cash, just chips.
Since then, I have seen 1 more. A chipper on this board bought one from a Ebay seller for practicly nothing.
After I took the 2 Sands and Flamingo chips out of the cup, the remaining chips were TCR value of $7700. Quite a gift.
I did write the history of downtown he gave me but never wrote his personal story. He was one of the most decorated soliders in the battle for several islands in the Pacific. He was also the only man to ever beat Sugar Ray Robinson as an amature boxer and he did it twice. In his own words, "Sugar kicked my ass in the 3rd fight." He had books full of articles and pictures of his life. Autographed pictures with everybody that was anybody from Sinatra on down. He opened the Monte Carlo as a dealer and went on to be Casino Manager and GM at some of the biggest named casinos on the Strip.
I called my old timer friend several weeks ago. He is very ill. I doubt if I ever get to see him again.
