... of my maternal grandfather, who we called "Pop" ----- he was a great fan of horse racing. Lived near Aqueduct Raceway in Queens, NY, and vacationed every year in Saratoga during racing season. I remember him poring over the racing form, too, but he always said that form was just a starting point and that you had to check out the horses (and the jockeys) closely just before race time before deciding how to bet. He must have been on to something for a city boy, because he won considerably more than he lost (much to the amazement of my grandmother, who didn't share his enthusiasm for the race track).
Pop is long gone now, since 1979, but the memories of those days just came flooding back when I read your post, Andy. Thanks. ----- jim o\-S
