Like Top, I also spent some time protecting government secrets (and even actively participating in the dissemination of outright lies and deceptions to the American press in Vietnam). I accept the necessity for secrecy in the name of national security, particularly in times of war, BUT most of what passes for "secret" information is kept secret not to protect national security, but to hide government ineptitude and/or malfeasance.
This is supposed to be a free country. The greater the secrecy imposed by the government, the less free we are. There is no better way to insure our freedom than to require our government to keep us informed.
