... I am (unfortunately) old enough to have remembered him winning the Derby (and the Preakness as well) in 1958. At that time, it had been 10 years since the last Triple Crown winner, so everyone was all excited at the possibility that year. Tim Tam was beaten in the Belmont by an Irish horse named Cavan, after the county from which my forebears came to the U.S. (the family story is that my paternal great-whatever-grandfather fled Cavan County to avoid being strung up for horse thievery.
My maternal grandfather was a big time horse racing fan, lived just down the street from Aqueduct Raceway in Queens, New York, and vacationed at Saratoga every year during racing season. Didn't get me any of those great old illegal Saratoga chips, though, so I keep having to buy them myself!! <g>
