Hey Gene & Archie,
I have a HP ScanJet IIcx that I bought back in Mar 1995. It works great, and I've done a lot of scanning!!! Yes it did cost me $1k, yet well worth it!
Scanners have come a long way since then, and the price has come down too!
Several things to remember are: CCD Vs CMOS; another is dpi; and the third is color depth.
CCD - Charged Couple Devices produces a MUCH Better image than does the Complimentary Metal Oxide Semiconductor -- i.e. the actual device that "senses" the color information
dpi - dots per inch - the higher (optical) the clearer the resultant image
color depth - 24, 30, 32 Vs 36 bits for each pixel (or dot on the screen/printer) represents the different number of colors that can be represented.
Archie's scan looks like it was scanned at a small dpi, and thus the pixelation or "blockyness". Archie, if you are using DeskScan to scan your images in, what is the "path" box say? You can try to change the path to "screen" by clicking the down arrow next to the box that "PATH:" is on the left of.
