FROM the New York Times:
California Indians and Casinos Fight Gaming Battle
American Indians in California, who say federally recognized sovereignty gives them a right to have untaxed casino gaming on their reservations, have raised about $43 million to sponsor a hotly contested ballot measure in the Nov. 3 election, the New York Times reported. While the ballot measure would permit broad expansion of the state's $1.4 billion Indian gambling industry, a coalition including Nevada casinos and church groups opposes what could become the most expensive political fight in California history. Opponents led by Hilton Hotels Corp. and Mirage Resorts Inc. have raised $15.5 million and spent another $1 million, bringing the total cost for both sides to about $60 million, surpassing the record of $57.5 million spent on a securities fraud measure two years ago, the paper said.
