The likelihood is quite high, if not absolutely certain, that not a single elected official played any part in the decision making process by which these x-ray devices were put into use by the Customs Service. And I'm sure you know just how difficult it is to get rid of the scoundrels when they are civil service employees! <g>
I'm also guessing that no new law was passed to put these things into use (other than perhaps the budget law which provided the money to buy them).
The invasion of our personal privacy is an insidious process that creeps along virtually unnoticed (and which is justified by all manner of "security" claims). Rather than embracing this stuff, as so many people seem willing to do, we should be fighting it every creep of the way. ----- jim o\-S
