Like Steve said there are dress codes in Europe. While visiting Amsterdam on a day trip I wanted to visit one of the casinos. I knew that suit and ties were not required and I was dressed in reasonable sports clothes. They did not mind my clothes but would not accept my tennis shoes! I had to go around the corner to the shoe store where they had a rack of closeout shoes labelled "casino shoes". Paid $50 for a pair of shoes that almost fit, $12 to get into the casino and lost another $100 in an hour gambling.
