I put 2 items up every year. I trust the marketplace to be fair, or even better in the convention situation. The club benefits from the 10%. The auction operator gets a fair price for all the effort making the catalog and running the auction.
If someone needs to protect their opinion of the value, with a reserve, it's probably too high. The club auction has year after year, exceeded "book" values for the majority of chips. (and shown lower trends on some over-valued items)
Nothing political or personal here for me. If I put up a chip and it brings half of what I think it's worth, it wasn't a steal, it was just a wake up call to get in contact with reality. If it gets double what I thought, the same applies. I was under value however.
Prices are not set in concrete, they are based in simple supply and demand and even more, perceived value to the interested buyers. The value of chips adjusts up and down. The club auction is as good of an indicator as anyplace else.
