Fukuoka City, located in Kyushu, the southernmost of
Japan's four main islands, has a population of approximately
1.2 million and is the region's academic and commercial center.
The city enjoys a convenient geographical location with easy access to
Asia and the major cities of Japan. It is the region's hub of transportation,
featuring a busy international airport,international ferry services, and the
regions largest and best-equipped container port. Domestically, it is the
southern terminus of Japan's famed Shinkansen, or bullet train, and is serviced

European Community, as is shown by its being the host city of the Asian-Pacific
Exposition in 1989, the Club of Rome Conference in 1990 and the summer games
of the student olympics, better known as the Universiade, in 1995.
