Re: Who are Roxane and Hector?
In Response To: Who are Roxane and Hector? ()

Hello,
Since no one out there in BB land came up with any help to my query, I did some research on my own. I went to Roger Tilley's "Playing Cards" book.
He writes, "Towards the close of the 16th century the French [playing card] manufacturers started christening the court cards with names taken from the epics of the Middle Ages, the Bible and the classics. Among them we find King David, Judas the Maccabee, HECTOR, Alexander the Great........Jeanne d'Arc." The cards bore the name of the personality. At the time of the French Revolutiuon contemporary heros (like Rousseau) were used, but enjoyed only fleeting popularity.

I think the Hector referred to above was an ancient Greek leader/general/hero. Tilley also refers to Hector on the Jack of Diamonds as being either Hector de Maris of the Round Table or Hector de Galard, a captain in the service of Charles v.

Tilley says the names of the Queen court cards were NOT the real wives of the Kings. They used goddesses and famous women. I couldn't find a Roxane court card. Maybe it is the beautiful Roxane heroine in the Cyrano story. (Cyrano de Bergerac is one of the most celebrated plays of the French theater. It was written by Edmond Rostand in

1897, when he was 29 years old.)

I copy here my earlier post:

I bought, on eBay, this beautiful, carved Victorian-style (could be from the 19th century) wood bone chip-playing card
container (see scan below). Three parts of the top of the box are hinged. They open up to reveal the chip-playing card
compartments. The best features of the "box' are the carved playing card figures on top -- "Roxane" is the queen of hearts
and "Hector" is the jack of clubs. You can see the carved figures best by clicking here (if the seller has not deleted the
pictures):

For the inside of the "box', click here:

THE REASON FOR THIS POST IS THE HOPE THAT SOME CULTURED MEMBER OF THE BB (THERE MUST BE
ONE) CAN TELL ME THE LITERARY OR WHATEVER REFERENCES TO ROXANE AND HECTOR. Thank you.
