The chips were issued a few years back by the makers of Marlboro cigarettes. You would get 5 "miles" coupons in each pack of Marlboro.
When you accumulated 775 miles (155 packs worth), you would get the poker set for free: 120 red chips, 60 white chips, and 60 black chips., along with two decks of Marlboro cards, all in a nice wooden case. I never smoked cigarettes, and I wanted the set for whatever strange reason, so I left my card at many grocery stores, saying I would buy "miles." It worked. It ended up costing me $35 for the coupons. I then paid Marlboro $5 for shipping, in April 1995. I was told by the Marlboro people that the set could not be bought retail. BUT NOW THEY HAVE BEEN DUMPED ON THE MARKET AND ARE ALL OVER EBAY FOR ABOUT THE SAME $40. Go know!
The chips are "nice" -- a fairly heavy plastic or nylon or whatever.
