Reputation is earned. Good reputation can come quickly, and the respect that follows can and does grow over time. Bad reputation can come even quicker than good reputation and how one deals with an incident that initially might give one a bad reputation can clear that person or bury their reputation for most regular memory.
I personally won't deal with unethical individuals no matter how good a deal might look. Misrepresentation of what you didn't even possess is to me unethical, and a flipant response to questioning your practices as being only your business is further reason to avoid any dealings with you.
