Trump Casino Holds Liquidation

October 18, 1999

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. - The Associated Press via
NewsEdge Corporation : Trump World's Fair Casino
was more like the Trump flea market Thursday: TVs
were going for $159, standup lamps for $45, alarm
clocks for $10, blankets for $5, pillows for $1.

The only thing missing was Donald J. Trump himself,
shouting through a bullhorn: ``Everything must go in
my biggest, best liquidation sale ever. The prices are
insaaaaane!''

A monthlong sale aimed at preparing the casino for
the wrecking ball kicked off Thursday, with bargain
hunters and souvenir collectors converging on the
22-story Boardwalk tower, cash and credit cards in
hand.

The lobby looked like a hastily opened furniture
showroom. Everything had a price tag on it.
Customers also were free to roam the 500-room hotel
in search of chairs, pictures, clock radios and other
items. Blackjack tables, slot machines and other
gambling devices were off-limits.

``I came looking for a wet bar for my house, but they
were too big,'' said Tom Breuel, 42, who was waiting in
line to pay for a wastepaper basket, an ice bucket
and two standup lamps. ``I'll probably come back
again. It's cheaper than I'd get these things in a
store.''

The awkwardly designed casino, which opened in 1981
as the Playboy and later operated as the Atlantis, has
always bled money. It was forced into bankruptcy in
1989. Trump bought it for $63 million and operated it
as a non-casino hotel _ Trump Regency _ for years
before investing $48 million and reopening it in 1996
as Trump World's Fair Casino.

It was losing $10 million a year by the time Trump
decided to demolish it and start over.
