I would much prefer a conversation to a p-----g contest, Janice. Maybe I'm just a "new" collector who will never hope to have one of everything, but if "the basic philosophy of a collector of anything is to have everything of that anything that exists," then do you have to have every $100, $500, $1000, $5000 chip put out? No one can hope to have everything. You have to choose a focus. I collect Hot August Nights, for example. I don't have the Hilton '98 $25 HAN. I'm very sad. I'm missing a lot of the Flamingo 12-chip sets. I don't care. Except I wish I had the car set.
One of my collecting goals is to have at least one chip from every casino that ever was in Reno. I will never attain that goal. I will keep trying. Same with Virginia City. And every brass core to $100. I'm missing the $100 Harvey's and Reno Ramada. Life is cruel sometimes.
It seems to me there is one primary reason casinos put out LEs. They are producing commemorative chips to make money off the collector. Of course it's also good advertising. And some casinos put out LEs because they have this silly idea collectors WANT them to.
Actually, I jumped in because it looked like you wanted to bash Chuck, and you bashed LEs instead. I think today much of the growth of the hobby comes from people collecting a few LEs, then getting interested in the history of chips, then catching the fever. I know you have done a lot for this hobby. I appreciate it. I like you. Collect what you want. Don't try to control the supply. Bash Chuck all you want. I'll jump out now.
