Well, Larry, if we have to get in a p-----g contest over this so be it. Maybe its the basic difference between new collectors and advanced collectors, maybe it is the difference between younger people and older people, I don't know which. What has always been the basic philosophy of a collector of anything is to have everything of that anything that exists, now that is the old view. If your new view is prevalent, of collect a few of this and a few of that, which others on this board have expressed at one time or another recently, then so be it. But to me and many others I know that is not collecting , it is just
accumulating with no particular goal in mind. Would you want to collect pennies by saying,"well I'll collect a 1927 and a 1928 then I'll just skip to 1930 and say my collection is complete"? Sorry that is just not an old stick in the muds way of doing things.
I have nothing against any particular casino, unless I feel they are just producing TOO many commemorative chips for no reason other than to make money off the collector and that is just what is happening today.
--Is releasing multi chip sets harmful?-- YES, only because it just becomes too expensive for lots of people. Example, in ONE WEEK recently, 10-$5 and 3-$25 at Gold Strike Hotel, 10-$5 and 3-$25 at Nevada Landing plus $1-$5-$25 at Gold strike and $1-$5-$25 at Nevada Landing. 1-$5 each at Barbary Coast, Gold Coast and Orleans.. Then 8-$5 at Excalibur. Just add that up and see what it comes to, and that was in just three days. If you have an unlimited budget to buy them that's great, but a whole lot of people, including us, do not.
--Is commemorating bullsh*t events harmful? Not at all, my very favorite chip is still and always will be the ground hog day chip from the Fiesta. I love the Four Queens 57 Chevy, and wouldn't even mind if they do more cars If they are maybe one every other month or so.
My original complaint was not directly against the Four Queen, as it was against Smorse's comment "With the new chips they have coming, and I know ALL OF THEM, it will put a LE collector in AWE" And I still say, no it's NOT going to put us in AWE, it is going to put us out of collecting.
You just might want to compile a list of people that have been collecting, say 5 years or more and see just how many have stopped collecting comm. chips because it just got to be too much and too many. Right up until a few months ago I was extremely proud of the fact my collection had EVERY SINGLE commemorative chip issued in the state of Nevada since 1980. Well that is no longer true, and I am no longer proud.
Those that know me well know this hobby has been the 2nd most important thing in my life (my husband being the first) for the past 20 years. Yes, Jerry and I started collecting chips and tokens all on our own long before there was an organization and long before we knew anyone else would ever think of doing such a crazy thing.
NOTHING I do is meant to be harmful, it is meant to EDUCATE to what can happen. Remember baseball cards and many other collectibles? Do you want the same thing to happen to this hobby? Now I guess I have finally run down and will get off my soap box. Very Sincerely, Janice O'Neal
