When I scan I get a .tif file. I always save this file as it carries all the hi res info. After scanning though, I convert the files to .jpg with a fantastic program I use daily called CompuPic. Download it at:

I always convert the .tif file to a .jpg at 80% and usually get an 8 to 14k file.
