The only thing I look for is if a payout is still on the machine. If nothing is lined up on the reels, that means your not starting from scratch. Someone has played the machine since a coin has droped. I find, this way it will cost me $20 or less except for the 4Queens or El Cortez. Which I've spent from $40 to $100 for one or three coins respectively.
