What can chippers ...
In Response To: Are we NUMISMATISTS? ()

... be called? We've had this discussion before here, without coming up with a definitive (or popular) answer.

In my opinion, we are not numismatists --- Webster's definition of numismatics:

>> the study or collection of coins, tokens, and paper money and
>> sometimes related objects (as medals)

though I suppose an argument could be made that casino chips are "related objects", since they serve as monetary substitutes.

"Gambling", per Webster, is "probably back-formation from gambler, probably alteration of obsolete gamner, from obsolete gamen (to play)." Which means that the currently popular transition from "gambling" to "gaming" is really a return to the original root of the word.

"Chip" comes from Middle English -- "akin to Old English -cippian".

So, maybe "gambling" collectors are "gamenatalists"; or chip collectors, "cippianalists". <wg> Both sound contrived.

How about just "chippers"?? <g> ----- jim o\-S
