Greg, a .gif is smaller than a .jpg? Not in my expereince! The conversion hoops that I've had to dive through (my scanner is 7 years old, the driver software was written in 1981) to get small file sizes works out to a .gif is about an eight the size of a .bmp, and a .jpg is about a third the size of a .gif, same resolution at every step.
