I have a set of these too. They do NOT look like ivory, and I don't think many will be fooled by them, and I don't think they were made to fool anyone. In 1996, when I bought my set, the T R King people told me they ordered them from Chipco for a T R King customer, maybe for a movie.
Anyway, they are like clay or chalk. Most important, (1) there is no grain whatsoever, not even a facsimile of a grain, included in the design.; and (2) the chip is perfectly flat, no incused scrimshaw engraving.
Also, the background color is a light gray or beige color, not white-yellow like ivory.
A small sidelight is that notwthstanding the above, I am sure some will buy them thinking they are/might be ivories. I can see an antique/flea market dealer putting them in a glass case with a $10 to $30 price on each with no explanation. And if asked what they are, he will say "I don't know", "I got them at an estate sale auction," or "I just picked them up from another dealer."
