With all due respect to Bob, I don't believe that the server pumping out an image has that much effect on the speed that the board runs. The big time consumer for a bb such as this is loading up the perl software then interpreting and a executing the code each time a button of any sort is pressed. These servers should be able to handle that quite well though.
No one can deny though that having an image in the message makes it take longer to read the first time. After that, the image is stored in the cache on your computer and loads from there rather than the server. At the same time, the benefits of having the image right there are obvious.
I suggest that if the board is running slow or you have a slow connection to the internet, then turn off images in your browser. That may speed things up some. Then you can simply choose to view the images that wish to.
