I agree with the principle of protecting patents, but in practice they only protect the guy with deep pockets. A company like Motorola goes around patenting every idea they have ever heard of, with high priced lawyers to work the words to cover every other idea.
The little company has to reveal everything about an idea to get a patent, then can't afford to sue a deep pocket infringer. Trade secrets seem to be the better bet for the little guy.
