I appreciate your well-phrased feedback, and I agree 100%. There are some things that are inherently wrong, and other things that society takes upon itself to prohibit in order to protect the fabric our society. However, I do believe the copyright laws protect copyrighted material, whether that material recites the entire copyright law or not, even whether or not the material properly includes a copyright notice. That was my main point. Of course, I am definitely not a lawyer, and my understanding of copyright law may not be perfect.
As to my comment, "But the instructions didn't say NOT to...," I was not talking about the stupidity of the seller or the lawyer, but the consumer. I do not remember any precise examples, but I have heard of lawsuits lately of the nature, "I shoved this thumbtack in my eye, and the maker is negligent because the package didn't specifically say not to." As you say (to paraphrase), some things are so essentially "stupid" that they are considered stupid whether or not anyone ever says "don't do this." But manufacturers are writing longer and longer lists of don'ts on their packages these days.
