Re: Pittman Wash
In Response To: Re: Pittman Wash ()

To All,
For those who are interested in this sort of thing, I received an email asking me how many washes are there? I thought I would post my answer on the BB to provide a little information for everyone.

No one including local news channels cares to talk about the "wash" areas located in the Las Vegas valley. It's kinda like talking about the Henderson cloud.<g> Much of this information I share with you comes from years of living in Las Vegas and talking with "old" timers. To the best of my knowledge there are six main washes. They are:

1) The Las Vegas Wash - the biggest and nastiest of all! It covers most of the south end of the valley.
2) The Range Wash - Covers a large part of North Las Vegas and feeds into the Las Vegas Wash.
3) The Flamingo Wash - Another "nasty" wash. This is the one Caesars Hotel & Casino as well as the Forum shops sits on. It also feeds in to the Las Vegas Wash. Flamingo Blvd becomes a river around Buffalo Dr. maybe even further North as it rushes down to meet the "strip".
4) The Tropicana Wash - This one runs from about Buffalo and Warm Springs to, I don't know, maybe Sahara and Nellis maybe further. If you drove up Trop (away from the strip) from the Orleans you could see part of it around Jones Blvd.
5) The Red Rock Wash - I believe this one starts around Hualapai Way and Flamingo.
6) The Pittman Wash - Covers most of Henderson when combined with The Las Vegas Wash.

I might be missing a couple but you get the idea. The Las Vegas flood control program is attempting to control these wash areas along with Duck Creek and the Las Vegas Creek and make them behave. Forget it!! Water goes where it wants too. You may get it to cooperate for a while. However, one day it rains so bad in the mountains that all hell breaks loose. The rain we had a few days ago really is nothing when compared to the entire history of Las Vegas. The Spanish didn't call it "The Meadows" for nothing. Best, Jim
