Hi Don,
We live on the Northwest side of the valley. Damage in and too my subdivision was minor. Our subdivision was built by Lewis homes. A builder from southern California who still takes a little pride in what he puts up. At least he did 14 years ago.<g> The company cared about where it built homes.
The homes were constructed with the natural grading left in tact. Drainage to the street, street to the corner, corner to the sewer worked well. The entire subdivision DOES NOT sit on a wash. The border of the subdivison may be close to the old "Las Vegas Creek" that fed into the main Las Vegas Wash located on the other side of town. Part of the Range wash (the northern part of the Las Vegas wash) was also fed by the Las Vegas Creek.
I repeat, those who are planning on moving to Las Vegas should learn a little about the valley history pertaining to "WATER" and where it goes when it rains in the mountains NOT in town!!!! Town rain causes problems but not like the "flash floods" caused by mountain rain. A street named Alta use to act as one of the main outlets for mountain rain. It was constucted years ago to handle the run off from the mountains. Many years ago, one could sit on the lawn of a home built on Alta and watch the water "rush" down the street without it coming over the curb.
Today with all the improvements<g> I wouldn't get within three blocks of Alta for fear of drowning!!! Change is Great isn't it????? Best, Jim
