Most of the people who come to Las Vegas for vacation could care less that a vast portion of the town is built upon flood plains. I call flood plains the overlapping area of a wash that could extend for a "mile" on either side.
Unscrupulous contractors have built subdivisions in wash areas as well as their surrounding flood plain. How can this be you ask??? Easy!!!! It's called money.<g> Take the town of Henderson (relax Andy) most if not all of it is in a flood zone. The only reason it didn't catch it this time is a thing called luck.
Caesars Palace is built on a wash hence the Forum shops under three feet of water. The IP also cuts through a wash area. The next time you are here go to the back of the IP and see how the land is carved out. The story goes on and on. No one seems to care until it starts to rain.<g> Turn on the local TV and you will see all kinds of local politicians (past & present) telling us viewers how are tax dollars were spent on local flood control otherwise it would be much worse!!! Give me a break! These are the same politicians who "scream" we are running out of water but who allow the hotel casinos to build artificial lakes.
Nothing is going to change. My advice to people wanting to move here. Make sure the place you buy your home is not built in a wash area or its surrounding flood plain. How can I find out? Easy - ask a local insurance agent if he will sell you flood insurance for your new home.<vbg> If he tells you to inquire with the federal government, that "they" sell flood insurance you know you have a problem. In addition that "high ground" justification won't cut it. Are you sure it isn't "high ground" in the center of the wash???<lol>
It is bad!!! It will get better. Until the next time when we may loose whole subdivisions. After all we spend millions on flood control! Yeah, right!! No one ever tells these politicans to talk to someone from the midwest who can assure them that the Mississippi river, when it flooded, went where it wanted too. Best, Jim
P.S. All joking aside there are many new developments hit hard. Ask the woman whose home near Rancho & Mesquite had two feet of water in it.
