Sergeant York: The Reluctant Soldier
BIOGRAPHY: SERGEANT YORK: THE RELUCTANT SOLDIER chronicles the life of Alvin C. York, who was born just 20 years after the end of the Civil War, in a remote rural area of Tennessee. Alvin was one of 13 children and was able to get only a third grade education. After the death of his father, Alvin had the responsibility of supporting his mother and siblings. He indulged in the vices of the day: drinking, card playing, and roughhousing. When his friend was killed in a fight in a saloon, Alvin swore off alcohol and devoted his life to being a God-fearing citizen. At the age of 30, Alvin York was ready to settle down and get married to his sweetheart, Gracie Williams. But the U.S. entered the Great War, and he was drafted into active duty. Even though he was a conscientious objector because of his religious convictions, he was convinced that this was a righteous fight, and it was his holy mission to go and participate in the "Just War. During one of the battles in the Argonne forest, York almost single-handedly killed 25 Germans and captured 132 more. He was hailed as the greatest Civilian Soldier of The Great War, and treated like a hero upon his homecoming. York refused to profit from his heroic deeds in the Argonne, and instead devoted his life to promoting education and building a school in his hometown of Pall Mall, Tennessee. The movie about his life, starring Gary Cooper, was an inspiration to Americans embarking on the battles of World War II.

Jim Reilly - Maybe 1 in 10 know of his name? In our schools today, maybe one in 100,000. Today's schools are too busy teaching kids how to feel good about themselves and eliminating academic competition. You'd have more success in asking today's students who was the leader of the modern feminist movement, what was Roe v. Wade and why Heather has 2 mommys.
