Carl,
Very nice reply, makes sense to me. (I've gotta admit I was jazzed when your set of 3 Trops sold a couple of weeks ago on eBay!!)
First we go through seemingly 100's of posts on a "grading system"... and now this. Maybe someone should publish a book with mandatory "asking prices" on chips. Sellers would then have to follow specific guidelines and would have LIMITS on the prices that they could ask for their chips. (Check with the old Soviet Union to get some advise on setting up these mandatory pricing structures, price caps, etc. They had a lot of experience with such things)
This entire thread started with the question... (to paraphrase...) "Why does "he" charge more that "I" think he should charge for HIS chips".
SIMPLE ANSWER - BECAUSE THEY ARE HIS CHIPS!!! "He" can ask whatever he wants.... and the customer will decide if they want to pay that asking price.
I saw a LOT of price stickers on chips at the convention that seemed pretty high for the chip they were attached to. But either you work out a deal with the owner.. or you walk on to the next table.
Simple question - Easy answer..... but it was still great fun to read the comments!! You're all a great bunch of folks.
