Chris, I don't know what auctions you're speaking of specifically, because you didn't link to any lot numbers. I do have a comment, though.
Auction consignors don't "charge" anything. They offer lots for bid. If no one bids, there's no sale. If there are bids, apparently someone was willing to pay the high bid. Lot offers aren't "charges."
On a related note, I've almost stopped bidding on eBay completely. I've become tired of getting ripped off for shipping and "packing and handling" charges by consignors. Please note that I am NOT talking about anyone in the chipping community. It's other consignors who I've had bad experiences with.
eBay needs a rule that says that unless otherwise stated in the lot description, only actual postage and envelope costs will be charged to the successful bidder. And the buyer should certainly have the option of regular mail instead of priority mail where there's a significant difference.
