Picked up a new book on Harrah's which I can recommend:
"Every Light Was On" (subtitled Bill Harrah and His Clubs Remembered) published by Univ of Nevada Oral History Project (UNOHP). A series of 22 oral history interviews by former employees of Harrah's in Reno and Tahoe. Interviews conducted by Dwayne Kling. 1999; 450+ pages. Cost: $24.95 at Gambler's Book Club.
Interviews include Sharkey Begovich (now owner of Sharkey's-Gardnerville); Scherry Harrah (former wife, and namesake for SH Corral casino) and others. Mentions hi-roller roulette game played by LaVere Redfield at the Nevada Club. (
See Herz book, pg. 202 for pic. of Redfield chips.) Lots of nuggets of interesting information for Nevada casino history enthusiasts. (I'm only on page 100, but enjoying the book a lot, so far.)
On the cover is Bill Harrah, in front of a now-valuable stack of obsolete chips. They appear to be (left to right): 10c hub mold chips with 2 inserts (L-value); $5 small key chips "Harrah's Club" (P-value); and $100 small key chips "Harrah's Club" (also P-value).
