Robert - You may want to start with Derek Cowan's (Antique Gambling Chips - Revised Edition) few pages on the subject of HERALDRY: the science that describes/designs Coats of Arms and all that good stuff. I've seen people read things like this at Antique Auctions in the same speed you and I would read a newspaper!
