Re: Chipping price guides

James C. raises some very valid observations about rarity. I believe there were only three or four chips that brought four figures in the club auction held last week. Yes, Jerry Wall's collection took a lot of money off the floor this year.... BUT, many of the chip purchased by dealers were re-sold at the show at much higher prices, thereby infusing money back into the marketplace for dealers to purchase additional chips to replace their depleted inventories. Most dealers reported excellent sales. Sales equals profit. Much of that profit I would imagine will be used to purchase additional inventory for future sales at future shows. James C. is also correct when he says that once a rare chip is sold (even if at an inflated price... according to price guides) it is salted away in a collection and may not see the light of day for a generation or more. Perhaps it will be an heir that will have the responsibility of disposing of these treaures later on down the road. I too have many undervalued chips listed in my A.C. Catalog. The reason this is so is because many of them have not been offered for sale in several years and still may have a previous price published that was paid for them. I do try to get input from a few other major market makers on pricing, prior to each new catalog I publish. I think most cataloguers do the same. However, when there is more than one collector with deep pockets who are competing head-to-head for a rare chip, you can throw ALL the price guides out the window. The sky is the limit! I predict we will see our first "legitimate" five-figure chip within three to four years... or sooner. I say "legitimate" in the sense of a single publicly documented sale.... not one that includes a trade of three or four other pricy chips to make it a five-figure deal or a report of a private transaction that is difficult to confirm. Just my thoughts on the subject. Good book James and Steve, although I still have personal difficulty accepting the term "Official" in the title. There is no question however, that this book will attract many, many, more people into the hobby. You should win "Recruiter Of The Year" next year hands-down with this book James and Steve,... if you apply yourselves and sign up all the newcomers that your book is bound to attract..
