Not to insult any organized religion - but ESPECIALLY being the newbie that I am, TCR is my "Bible" when it comes to Nevada Chips.
I have been burned in years past by all the Comic Guides, Record Album Price Guides, Sport Cards Guides, Coin Guides, and such. TCR is the most honest hobby/collecting book I have seen. Period. If I see a Nevada chip selling for more than 10-15% over TCR, I pass on it. Some might say that I could pass up a real hidden gem this way... but for me, it's the safest way to go for now.
As far as the comments on this thread about someone wanting to trade one of their $1 chips for a $40 one... Heck, that could have been me! I do not know the value of very many chips by sight OR memory. (At my age, I'm lucky to remember what I had for breakfast this morning!!) If a specific Nevada chip is not clearly marked with a price tag (and I don't have TCR with me) - I'll probably assume that the owner is offering it for a swap at face. If I ask if he/she wants to swap, it doesn't make me a thief... just ignorant about that specific chip. Mark every one of your chips with a price tag OR be prepared to politely "Just Say No" if you don't want to swap. Works for me...
Thanks again to all the volunteers for a fantastic Convention.
Best,
Steve Snowden
