Re: Universal Numbering System-New thread

My comments about some personal attacks were not directed toward any of the comments made on this board that I am aware of but rather to comments appearing elsewhere. Those of you who know me personally know that I have a thick skin and can take a lot of critcism. In fact, my closest "friends' just describe me as being thick. I enjoy debate on the issue of a system and have been able to improve on the earlier versions of my sytem only as a result of individuals pointing out problems which I then attempted to correct. With respect to some of the comments, I want to state that NO system can cover all situations and not every author should be forced to conform to a particular sytem. However, I believe that a standard should be established. The time involved is not as grat as one would think. I was able to number Atlantic City with about 800 entries in 10 hours which could have been cut in half if I knew how to type. Even The Chip Rack, with nearly 10,000 entries could be re-numbered for a conversion table, by a small group of dedicated individuals in less than a week. If a common number were established, collectors could cross reference even 10 different independent author based numbers to a common number and thereby be sure they were dealing with the same item. Authors having a reason for grouping and classifying the gaming items they are working with would still have the option of using the pre-existing adopted system or developing an independent system to meet their special needs or tastes. One of the important benefits of a standardized numbering system is that it would allow all types of gaming materials to be identified in a common fashion. Someone who is not familiar with tokens does not have to learn a whole new ID system to identify a token, or a tournament chip, or jeton, or some other special area of collecting. We all tend to think provincially and look only at our own area of interest without taking the larger picture into consideration. I remember discusing my original thoughts on a system with a collecting friend about two years ago. He thought I was crazy. He only collected $1 chips and most instances, only collected one chip from each casino. He saw no need for any numbering system for his collection. He merely needed a list of casinos. I agreed. But that is not the case for the hobby as a whole. I welcome all comments made in good faith regardless of "wrong" the party may be. "Wrong" is defined by Webster's Dictionary as any opinion that differs from mine.
