Mr. Ginsburg of CT,
The GUN system is intriguing, and does warrant consideration - as does all numbering systems. However, I also agree with Dr. Myers' comments. I too know that you have put a lot of time in to the creation of your GUN system - as the description of it shows this to be true.
Sometimes a system that is so general, if it is not completely understood by the users, is then interpreted as being very complex and cumbersome. I know this to be true, as one of the computers I designed for work was in my mind a very simple one to use. It had a lot of capability, yet when other engineers were presented with it to be used in their designs, they opted not to, as they didn't know what to do with the additional capabilities that they didn't need to use (input & output ports, interrupt levels, timers etc...). I assured them, that if they didn't need a particular feature, then them didn't have to use it. It is an up hill battle, yet one that can be won.
I assure you my comments were not directed at you or anyone else, if they were interpreted as taking pot shots at you, then I owe you an apology. I assure you, they were not intended to be. I was expressing my concerns in response to an open invitation for "comments and opinions about a numbering system". The comments that I made are applicable to any and all numbering systems.
In your description you have addresses some of the concerns I had expressed, yet not all. Again, I point this out not as a fallacy just a concern that I would like to see addressed.
As I have stated before - "I don't want the outcome of the conversations that have had transpired in the past generate a lot of negative "karma" on this attempt - yet I'm not convinced that any one solution will be easily understood or accepted or used by all." Still holds true, in my humble opinion...
I agree with you, that the authors of the current "Chip Guides" need to embrace the numbering system that the committee comes up with (if any) if a universal numbering system it to be truly used by all. Yet, I'm afraid that unless the various authorities - Authors of TCR, Cyber Guide, Colorado Chip Exchange, Nevada Gaming Checks & Chips, Black's Guide to AC (Sorry Archie - I didn't intentionally leave you or anyone else out in my earlier post...), etc. are convinced and change their publications and/or sites, a general numbering system may find it very difficult to be adopted for universal use.
Just my two cents...
Dick
