The Ginsburg Universal Numbering system (GUN numbers) starts with a base number. An example would be: "HIL-1.00-L-03". The number would be read as a chip coming from the Hilton casino, having a $1.00 denomination, being a limited edition chip, being the third $1.00 limited edition chip identified for that casino. The extended number which would not normally be printed would include a prefix such as follows: "USA-NV-LV". The prefix indicates that the casino was located in Las Vegas, NV,United States. The system utilizes various letters in the base number to further ID the type of gaming instrument it was: T=Token, N=No Cash Value, R=Roulette, H=Regular Issue, etc. Casinos in the same city having the same name could be differentiated by having the casino name abbreviation followed by a number: "HIL.2". Variations of a chip would be identified by a similar number after the specific chip number: "HIL-1.00-L-02.1". In those rare situations where the mold should be included to ease ID, the mold abbreviation can be added as a suffix: "HIL-1.00-L-02-HC". Similar accomodation can be made to cover other special situations. If a system were to be endorsed it is anticipated that a small committee of "experts" in each area would be utilized to establish the initial numbers for that area of collecting. Once I established what I wanted to do, it took me about ten hours to create the conversion table for Black's AC numbers. A good typist could probably cut that time in half. The Club committee appointed to work on a numbering system is considering several options including my system with some (twists of its own). Comments before next week's convention are requested.
