I haven't heard of any slowing down problems. The cookies allow several nice features such as:

New messages marked as "new"

Your name and email address are entered automatically for you

Your preferences for sorting and what messages are displayed are saved.

I don't know if there is a maximum message size or not. I'll have to check that out and see.
