Very few Chinese brought gaming tokens or chips from the old country since the informal games they learned on the North American continent were played with cash....whether Canadian or US. or Terr. of California. The need for chips did not arise until the "Tongs" decided to create a common identifiable (tracking) device when they franchised Pan, Pai Gow and early poker games along the mining towns and delta towns of California. These "tent" games were impromptu the majority of the time and stakes changed so the denoms were seldom imprinted on the chips. Many had the characters "Gold Mountain" etc. denoting the gold rush era.
Howard Herz and I are in the process (Howdy's "process" often drags into a lifetime) of defining some chips and translations are being done by my 87 yr old Uncle. I could not see the chip in question since the image was "missing" and Mona Lisa was depicted. Would like to get a hard copy to take into SF when I do research amoung the Seniors (senior even to ME!!) of Chinatown and North Beach.
