I do have some Chinese tokens ( Chines symbols with holes in the middle) that I bought from a 90 year old lady in an antique shop in Vancouver. They have been painted different colors. this is the story she told.

The Chinese brought them to Canada in the late 1800's. It seems many Chinese were brought to build a railroad similar to the American situtation. It was a crime to gambol with Canadian coin of the realm, so they brought their own and painted them for denominations. Orientials loved to gambol, so she said. They look very old. She had a jar ful. I went for the story and gave her $1 for 4 different colors.
