I bought my Hewlett packard ScanJet 5p about 6 months ago and have been very pleased with it. I see some 'no -name" models in the stores in the last few months for a bit less money but having used HP products in the lab all my career, I tend to pay a little more for a name I know. It is flat bed, scans a little larger than letter size, and will do a page in about 30 seconds at maximum resolution. You should invest in some graphics editing software as well; that supplied with the HP unit is not very flexible. You need at least to be able to Sharpen an image, and adjust its brightness, contrast, and size. I have been happy using Photodeluxe by Adobe.
HP software does come with a little utility that lets you use your scanner and printer as a photocopy machine. I've saved lots of trips to the print shop when I need just a few copies at home. I just scanned my slot-club cards and they are now printing on the laser printer so I'll have something to take to Arizona Charlies next week. Next step is a color printer to save color-copying the chip collection at the print shop; B/W won't cut it with chips when you are trying not to buy a duplicate.
Good Luck!
