I think that the comparission to the BB card market is bogus. I have heard it many times and have used it myself. BB cards are produced by the millions by many different companies. Each one is competing to produce the best looking Pete Rose card. Do you get the best looking one, all of them, or the one you think will go up in price? AND, you have to buy 20 of them and hope you get the key.
A good example: The Fiesta produced 3 different $1 chips. There was 16,000 of the 1st one and 2,000 each of the 2nd and 3rd. Within a few weeks the largest part of the 16,000 issue will be destroyed. No one else is issuing Fiesta chips. You have $3 invested and you have all of them. Where is the comparission?
Dealers: Do not buy from them if theit prices are too high. SHOP!!! There are enough chips out there that you could build a fine collection without ever paying over face. I did it for 30 years, before I ever knew a chip dealer existed. Do you need all chips today? Take your time, the hobby can be fun, if you let it.
Chip Rack: It is the best, the hobby has to offer. A lot of work went into the pricing, but it is not perfect. I have never paid the chip rack price for one single chip. I offer half. If it is not enough, I wait. There is always another chip down the road.
The chips offered today at face, will be tomorrows rare chips. Once I get a chip, I do not care if it goes up or down in price. I will never sell it at any price, unless I can get another one. In that case, I would get the other one and sell it.
