Next takes you to the next message numerically and would work chronolically as well I believe. Each message is assigned a number when it is posted. You can see the number when you pass your mouse over a message link. The last part of the url will be ?read=534 for example. 534 is the number of the message that you posted asking this question.

So, if you log on and find the "first" new message that you haven't read, then next will take you through them one by one until they have all been read. But, if you start somewhere in the middle then it won't find the first ones.
