Greg, you need to learn more about laptop communicating on the road. A phone line coupler should have allowed you to link your laptop to the hotel phone line that plugs into the phone. I take splitters, couplers, 25' modular phone lines, power splitters, surge protection and extension cords with me on the road. I've even had to rewire a room that didn't have a modular connection just for one weekend to use my laptop to get online.
The stuff that you might find yourself using a lot needs to be replaced on a regular basis. Not too many hotels have the dataport phones, so splitters and/or couplers should be replaced twice a year if you travel a lot. They work okay for a while, but data transmission requires an extremely clean line.
I've stayed in one hotel that actually had a dedicated phone module for a laptop. ...however, there wasn't a source of power anywhere close to the six foot cord on my power strip, so I had to run an extension cord to use it!
Bob (I'll be on the road at least a half dozen times more this year, and I'm sure I'll find another piece/part that I'll need to buy before the year is over).
