Joe,
I've been reading your gif jpeg messages with a lot of interest. I just recently began saving files in jpeg because they look better than in gif. The main place I see the difference is when a color gradually changes shades across the face of the chip. In gif files there is a marked line where each color change takes place. There is none with my jpeg files.
I scan all my chips at 100 dpi in tif mode. That makes a 73K file which I convert to a jpg file at 90% which, depending on the amount of color in the chip, usually gives me a 9 - 15K file.
